Firefighters evacuated the entire stairwell, evacuating several people. There were no casualties. After the Fire and Rescue Service arrived at the building, specialists from the Riga City Building Department inspected the building and forbade the residents to return to the building until an in-depth examination had been carried out. The scene was cordoned off and representatives of the State Police were on duty at the scene. At 20.08 FRS completed its work at the scene.

The Soviet building regulations set the age of these buildings at 50 years. 70% of Riga’s housing stock is precisely these buildings, popularly called «Khrushchevka» because they were built when Khrushchev ran the USSR in the 1960s, and almost all the buildings are in a similar condition.
