According to Latvian portal nra.lv, to commemorate the anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, a sunflower garden will “blossom” in Jaunjelgava on Friday, February 24, at 13.00. More than 150 sunflowers made of plywood will be installed in Jaunjelgava Old Town Park.

The event will open with an address by the Aizkraukle municipal administration and a prayer for the fallen in the Ukrainian war by the chaplain of the 55th Infantry Battalion of the National Guard. The event will be attended by a vocal group from the Jaunjelgava Cultural Centre “Fridrihštate”, as well as teachers from the Aizkraukle Music School. Arturs Zemnieks and Līga Butane with their pupils.
All visitors will be treated to traditional Ukrainian borscht made by Ukrainians living in Jaunjelgava. Organizers invite all Latvian residents to take part in the event, especially Ukrainians who have found temporary shelter in Aizkraukle and other places in Latvia.
In cooperation with the association SOS Assistance to the Ukrainian Army, donation packages will be collected and delivered to those who are fighting in Ukraine.
24 February marks one year since Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the invasion of Ukraine.
