LATVIA – REZEKNE (08/11/2022)
According to LSM.lv dismantling the monument to Soviet soldiers known as «Alesha» is a «big mistake for the state that the majority of Rezekne residents do not support», Rezekne Mayor Aleksandrs Bartasevics told Latvia’s Radio 4 programme «Details» on air.

The monument to Alesha will be completely dismantled by 15 November, but for security reasons the exact date of demolition has not been disclosed in agreement with the Security Police and the State Police.
In his address, the mayor recalled the proposal of the City Council to move the monument to the Peace Cemetery even before the law banning the display of objects glorifying the Soviet and Nazi regimes and their dismantling on the territory of the Republic of Latvia came into force.
The process of dismantling Soviet monuments began on 22 August 2022 in Riga’s Victory Park in Pārdaugava with the demolition of a stele to the liberators of Riga from the Nazi invaders.
At the end of October the monument «Defenders of Liepaja 1941» was dismantled, and on the night of 30-31 October two monuments in Daugavpils were demolished, which was not without incident.
