LATVIA – LEGISLATION
On Wednesday, April 5, the Latvian Saeima adopted the law on compulsory military service in its third reading, the parliament’s press service said. The law states that Latvian male citizens must be called up for national defence service within one year after reaching the age of 18.

The first conscription will take place on 1 July this year. Until the end of the year, conscription will be voluntary and from 1 January 2024 service will become compulsory. The term of service will be one year. Conscription is planned to take place twice a year.
The law stipulates that failure to show up for a summons from the Ministry of Defense without a valid reason will result in a warning or a fine of up to 350 euros. Evading military service is subject to prosecution under the Criminal Code.
It is noteworthy that compulsory military service in Latvia was abolished in 2007. Since then the country has had an army on a professional basis only.
