The number of Latvians has decreased in Latvia

LATVIA – Residents of Latvia 

According to the information study of the Central Statistical Office (2022), at the beginning of this year 1,182,000 Latvians lived in Latvia.

Since 2011, the population of Latvia has decreased by 74,300 people.

On the other hand, the proportion of Latvians has increased. If in 2011 Latvians accounted for 60.5% of the total population of Latvia, this year the share of Latvians has reached 63%.

In addition, the ethnic composition of the population varies significantly across regions and national cities. According to CSOs, Latvians accounted for 20.9% in Daugavpils.

The highest proportion of Latvians was 85.4% in Valmiera.  The highest share of Latvians was 87.9% in Vidzeme, and in contrast – 46.5% – Latgale.

It should also be noted that at the beginning of this year, the share of Russians in Latvia was 24.2%, Belarusians – 3.1%, Ukrainians – 2.2%, Poles – 1.9%, Lithuanians – 1.1%.

The share of other nationalities is 4.5%. The average age of Latvians is 40.5 years, Russians – 48.4 years, Belarusians – 56.4 years, Ukrainians – 53.4 years, Poles – 52.1 years, Lithuanians – 52.1 years.
