People say goodbye to the soviet monument – 37 people detained

LATVIA – DAUGAVPILS (30/10/2022)

A total of 37 people were detained in Daugavpils on Sunday at the monument to Soviet soldiers to be demolished in the Square of Glory.

Most of the detainees did not obey the demands of police officers or were drunk in a public place. Dismantling of the monument to Soviet soldiers in the Square of Glory in Daugavpils began on Monday night.

A total of 37 cases of administrative offences were initiated: 15 for disobeying the lawful demands of police officers; 13 for being under the influence of alcohol in a public place; 3 for petty hooliganism; 3 for performing military songs glorifying military aggression in a public place; 1 for glorifying military aggression and war in Russian in a public place; 1 for violation of drone flight rules; 1 for drinking alcohol in a public place.

One criminal case has also been opened for property damage.
The subsequent dismantling of the monument proceeded without incident when the persons were dispersed, police said.
