Russia changes air attack tactics

WORLD – UKRAINE

Russia has changed its tactics for airstrikes. In order to confuse and overwhelm Ukraine’s air defence system, it has launched missiles without warheads or balloons with deflectors that are picked up by radars and cause the air defence system to falsely activate.

“They seek to overload our air defence to be able to hit our infrastructure more effectively,” says Mykhaylo Podolyak, an adviser to the head of the Ukrainian presidential administration.

He explains this by saying that Russia is running out of missiles and therefore needs to use them more effectively.

According to Podolyak, the balloons can provide the Russians with information about Ukraine’s air defence. Six such balloons were detected over Kiev on Wednesday. Most of them were shot down.

“The enemy wants us to use our air defence, which protects our strategic facilities, against these balloons, which are essentially worthless,” Air Force spokesman Yuriy Ignat said.
