Someone drew a Russian flag on the Little Mermaid statue in Copenhagen

WORLD – DENMARK

The pedestal of the Little Mermaid statue, one of Copenhagen’s most popular landmarks, was painted in the colours of the Russian flag on Thursday, Reuters reports. The incident has been described as an act of vandalism. According to a police spokesman, the culprit is not yet known.

Denmark, along with other Western countries, has become a vocal critic of Russia since its invasion of Ukraine last year.

The iconic bronze statue by Edward Eriksen dates from the 19th century and depicts the character of the Little Mermaid from the fairy tale of the same name by Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen. Located in the Danish capital of Copenhagen, the statue is set on a rock near the Langelinie promenade.

It should be said that the statue is rather often vandalized. On several occasions it has lost its head or arm, and once even fell off a cliff into the sea after an explosion. More than once it has been painted in different colours or written messages by people wishing to draw attention to themselves in this way.
