Stoltenberg: Finland will become the 31st member of NATO on Tuesday

WORLD – NEWS

On Tuesday, when Finland becomes the 31st member of the alliance, the Nordic country’s flag will be hoisted outside NATO headquarters, Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said.

“From tomorrow, Finland will become a full member of the Alliance,” Stoltenberg told reporters on Monday, on the eve of the NATO foreign ministers’ meeting in Brussels.

Turkey on Thursday became the latest NATO country to ratify Finland’s membership of the US-led defence alliance.

Stoltenberg said Turkey would hand over the official documents to US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken on Tuesday, during a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Brussels.

A Finnish flag-raising ceremony will also take place outside NATO headquarters on Tuesday afternoon.

Joining Finland, which shares 1,340 kilometres of border with Russia, would roughly double the alliance’s current border with its Cold War adversary.
