The US Department of Defence recently published a memorandum on poppy seed consumption and drug testing in the US military.
Tests have shown that some varieties of poppy seeds contain more codeine, a substance in the opioid group, than previously thought.
The consumption of poppy seed products may therefore lead to a positive urine drug test.
For reasons of caution, the Department encourages all military personnel to avoid consuming poppy seeds in any form, including food and baked goods.
