US plans sanctions against Budapest, says Hungarian website

HUNGARY – NEWS

The US government is planning measures against Hungary and sanctions against influential Hungarian figures, the Hungarian portal 444.hu reported on Tuesday.

Citing diplomatic sources, the website said the move could be similar to the one taken in 2014, when the US banned six Hungarian citizens from entering the country under the guise of corruption charges.

US plans sanctions against Budapest

The current US ambassador to Budapest, David Pressman, has repeatedly criticised the Hungarian government for its stance on the war in Ukraine.

Hungary does not provide any military support to Ukraine, limiting itself to humanitarian aid and refugee reception, while the country’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban calls for an immediate ceasefire and peace talks.

Despite strong support for Ukraine from all NATO members, Orban continues to insist on his country’s neutrality and opposes increased arms deliveries to Ukraine, arguing that such moves only escalate the conflict and threaten to drag the West into war.
