Will Facebook and Instagram become fee-based?

LITHUANIA – META (Facebook)

Technology company Meta, which owns social networking sites Facebook and Instagram, is launching Meta Verified, a subscription service costing up to €15 a month. The new feature will allow users to verify their identity. What changes will it bring?

Will Facebook and Instagram become fee-based?

“Every Facebook and Instagram user who purchases a subscription will receive a blue verification icon next to their account. This will mean that the profile is managed by a specific person and will also provide the user with a number of benefits, such as increased visibility on the social network,” BITĖS Profai expert Martynas Vrubliauskas notes in the press release.

Announcing the new subscription, Facebook CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg emphasised that the new service aims to improve reliability and security in the social networks managed by Meta.

According to a study commissioned by BITĖS Profai in 2022, one in ten Lithuanians use a fake social media profile.

“If Facebook and Instagram set out to eliminate all fake accounts, there would simply be no need for the Meta Verified service,” the expert notes.

Almost 15 euros a month

According to Vrubliauskas, the verification badge is designed to identify trusted and official accounts, which should help content creators connect with their audience and expand it. Businesses and organisations that purchase the subscription will have direct access to the platform’s customer support system and better protection from fraudsters and malicious online users.

The expert also notes that the subscription will only be available on presentation of ID and the monthly cost of the service on iOS and Android devices will be almost €15.

“Currently, the new service – the verification badge – is available in test mode on Facebook and Instagram platforms only for New Zealand and Australian users, but in the near future it is planned to be spread worldwide, including in Lithuania,” the expert adds.
